Seena Owen

From 2017- 21, I made five works inspired by the face and performance of silent film star Seena Owens in her role as Queen Regina V in the 1929 silent film Queen Kelly. In the movie, Owens discovers the prince, her fiancé, in a compromising position with another woman and breaks out in a jealous rage. As I was watching this on my computer, I began to take tight screenshots of the various emotions that came across her face, including those of anguish, rage, and jealousy. I tried to capture and re-interpret those expressions (in screenshots and digital prints) in a work symbolic of the suffering caused by both historic and current persistent acts of violence and discrimination perpetrated against women and girls worldwide.
