Venus of Willendorf Recontextualized

This series is informed by my 1995 painting Venus of Willendorf, whose subject was originally based on a found pornographic image. My interest in that image has always centered on its forced perspective, which renders the figure more massive and powerful than conventionally sensual. Nearly 30 years later, I chose to resurrect this form, triple the image into a polytypic structure and embed a contrasting image within the central figures to both deepen its psychological and emblematic resonance. I wanted to use the body as both a stage and a symbol. A stage that reveals the drama of the balancing act unfolding within all women and a symbol of female strength and burden.
