A Bacchanalian Banquet at Flux Factory

In 2012, the Flux Factory commissioned me to create a Bacchanalian Banquet for their Banquet of America Experiment for the special event night. The concept was to create an experimental utopian village centered around a banquet table. This was accomplished by a dynamic group of international performance and conceptual artists who built a town within the gallery, complete with a theater and specialized shops. The artists then inhabited the space for the duration of the show, eating and living with each other in structures made from reclaimed materials.

The concept for my closing night event, a Bacchanalian Banquet, was to create a decadent feast, a visual and tactile extravaganza free from social rules that impose limits on self-expression. Influenced by Greek and Roman saturnalia and Filippo Martinetti’s Futurist Cookbook, guests were instead encouraged to explore new and freeing ways of interacting with both the food and each other. The event was documented in photographs, prints, on canvas and videotape.
